Finke Desert Race 2026: 50 Years of Alice Springs Going Off-Road
The Tatts Finke Desert Race is 50 years old in 2026.
That is a milestone worth celebrating — and in Alice Springs, they will.
Running from 5 to 8 June 2026, the Finke is one of the world's great off-road races. Bikes, cars, and buggies tackle a punishing two-day course from Alice Springs to the Aputula (Finke) community and back — 226 kilometres each way through some of the most remote and beautiful country in Australia.
Why it's a big deal
The Finke is not a local event. It draws competitors and spectators from across Australia and overseas. For a few days every June, Alice Springs becomes the centre of the off-road racing world.
The atmosphere around town during Finke week is something else. If you've never experienced it — come and see what Alice Springs does when it puts on a show.
Staying safe at Finke
The June long weekend in Alice Springs means sun, dust, and a lot of activity. A few practical tips:
Stay hydrated — even in June, Central Australia can catch visitors off guard. Dust is a real factor, especially for spectators near the course. If you have respiratory conditions, plan accordingly.
And if you're racing — respect the course. Fifty years of Finke history has produced some incredible feats. It's also produced some serious injuries. Preparation matters.
The Bath Street Family Medical Centre is here during the week — Monday to Friday 8.30am – 6.00pm, Saturday 9.00am – 10.30am. Call us on (08) 8952 2000.
